"Seattle Center High?

A REAL opportunity for the Wrights to show civic spirit.

The meeting at SC is typical of the kinbds of meetings developers set up to satisfy concerns about “democracy.”

Here in SLU, I have attended “community councils” .. pretty funny when basically no one lives there. A LOT of folks who work for Vucan or for firms that work fr Vulcan atteneded (of course).

Back at Space Needle Park, I had not realized that the Chihulu Collection was intended to be managed by the Space Needle.
Why not privatize all of SC and let the Wrights run the whole thing?

We could, of course, make a few regulations .. zoning laws so they did not turn it into condoms (not a typo) or a theme park.

Actually, I have a better idea. Why not BUILD a central high school there? Seattle is unique amongst “major” cities in not having one. The school could be integrated with the arts centers, science museum, and even the Gates. The nearby UW School of Med campus, Amazon, the Hutch, could help out too!

Is the cost of building it an issue? Maybe not. Why not get the Wrights to INVEST in it as a multipurpose building and let the Wrights use it as an adjunct to the Space Needle on eves and weekends. This way the building might even make money!

For example, instead of just a gym, Center High could have an athletic Center with pay for use facilities that could include a swimming pool, bike trails, climbing wall (up the side of the Needle?).

There could be an arts center where students could learn crafts .. including glass making. Chihulies stuff could be an inspiration but the Center could also house an expanded NW Crafts museum, perhaps bringing in the very Chihuly pieces the Wrights so love along with promoting the work of Seattle’s large community of talents artists and artisans.

A multiuse school also addresses the seasonality of the Center use by Tourists.
In the Summer, the school could work with the UW, SU, etc to offer “courses” for profit that would also attract tourists.

Center High students could also participate in the weekly ethnic festivals at Center House, work as interns in other Center and nearby institutions. The work could include private sector jobs at Amazon or downtown.

Artists in residence would demonstrate their crafts to the public on weekend’s.

Center High?"

Letter to the Seattle Times

After the PI closed, we refused to change to the Times because, to be blunt, the Times seemed to have much too little news.

Recently, my wife responded to a "special offer."

We want to cancel the Times. Your editorial opinions seem more appropriate for a Tea Bagger newsletter than for the sole remaining Seattle newspaper. The writing is often poor, but the endorsement of Rob McKenna's actions is over the top. Mr. Blethen needs a course in Government 101 .. as well as lessons in grammar.
We do, after all, have a government of checks and balances based on law. If an AG has the independent ability to decide that he or she can determine the state's interest, doesn't that create the office as nearly a fourth branch of government?

I thought that the concept of our courts is that parties to an action must be able to show an interest in the action. IF Mr. McKenna can not show that he represents the interests of the State, then who does he represent?

Perhaps he represents Mr. Blethen?

Eating at the Back Door of the Restaurant

A Restaurant Review by Angela Garbes

First, a confession: When Anchovies & Olives opened on the ground floor of an ugly new building
just a few blocks from my house (at 15th and Pine), I was annoyed. I grumpily wondered aloud if Seattle really needed another Ethan Stowell restaurant. Selfishly, I was also concerned about the disappearance of on-street parking at the hands of smug, upper-class foodies. My boyfriend and I made a point of “forgetting” the restaurant’s name, walking by and gesturing towards “Artichokes & Ostriches” or ...

The food at Anchovies & Olives is undeniably great. And while A&O is too pricey for us to have dinner there often, it’s now my favorite neighborhood restaurant. Why? Because they’ve created incentives for local residents to drop in casually for a drink and some snacks. ...Case in point: Their twice-daily Power Hour, featuring $1 oysters (and we’re talking good oysters—Totten Virginicas, Kusshis, Kumamotos), $2 Peronis, and $5 wine and prosecco. ...

During late night ...on Friday and Saturday .., A&O is offering $5 “Chef’s Choice” specials. Five bucks gets you a plate of whatever the hell the kitchen wants to make you, and believe me, you want to be picking up whatever they are throwing down. Such as:
• Smoked mackerel over a salad of fennel, peas, chickpeas, and red currants. ($5!)
• Fried skate “riblets” (scrumptious long pieces of tender cartilage with plenty of meat to suck and pick off) with celery, pine nuts, onion mostarda, and chilis. ($5!)
• Saffron risotto with geoduck and sorrel. ($5!)

Angela seems to me to have a bad case of Pretensions on the Cheap. A menu tending to things like skates ribs and pigeon toes, usually flavored with olive oil make me wish for something as simple as putansca or even the great cacciatores of my childhood in Boston's North End..Just because it combines unlikely ingredients does not make a dish into an ouevre. Do I really want to feel like some beggar at the back door?

Health Care Reform Reactions From Around The World

Health Care Reform Reactions From Around The World: "Der Spiegel argues that while the reform was 'good for America,' it was ultimately 'bad for the world' due to the heavy price Obama may pay in terms of popularity.

US President Barack Obama has a significantly different view of democracy than Bismarck did, but the German's observation remains valid. For more than a year, Obama watched his healthcare reform churn through the law-making grinder. His political opponents sliced piece after piece from his most important domestic political project -- Obama himself even grabbed the knife occasionally. The public show was such that American voters slowly lost faith in the president's health care reform plan. On Sunday evening, it finally made it through the House of Representatives. Obama's apron, though, is splattered with blood."

Breaking News and Opinion on The Huffington Post: "Robert Kuttner: Defining Moment

Co-Founder and Co-Editor of The American Prospect

It has taken more than fourteen months for Obama to vindicate as president the leadership potential that we saw on the campaign trail; fourteen months to give up on the fantasy of bipartisanship; fourteen months to start truly inspiring ordinary people as he did as a candidate. But in the springtime of March 2010, we have seen a president who evidently has learned how to lead, who relishes winning, and who is primed to become a more effective progressive. For that we should be grateful. It should whet his appetite as a fighter -- and ours."

Randy Neugebauer Revealed As 'Baby Killer' Shouter: Texas Republican Apologizes

Randy Neugebauer Revealed As 'Baby Killer' Shouter: Texas Republican Apologizes: "Randy Neugebauer (R-Tex.) identified himself as the member of congress who shouted 'baby killer' during Rep. Bart Stupak's (D-Mich.) speech on the floor of the House of Representatives Sunday night.

Neugebauer, a three-term member of Congress from Texas, issued a statement of apology on Monday, saying that the statement was not directed at Stupak.

'In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase 'it's a baby killer' in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership,' Neugebauer said. 'I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.'

Hmmm ... I thought he said, "What a thriller!"

The "Hottest" Researchers | The Daily Scan | GenomeWeb: "A Reuters survey of top researchers has named MIT's Rudolf Jaenisch the 'hottest' in the world, saying his MIT stem cell lab has consistently broken barriers in the field. The annual list also named noted genomics experts at the Broad Institute: Eric Lander, Mark Daly, and David Altshuler. Jaenisch works with embryonic stem cells and iPS cells, and had 14 of the most cited papers, according to the survey. His research uses iPS cells to study Parkinson's disease and sickle-cell anemia. Other researchers that made the top 12 include biostatistician Goncalo Abecasis of the University of Michigan, who has worked with the team from Broad; Carlo Croce from Ohio State University; and Shizuo Akira of Osaka University for his work on toll-like receptors."

Puddy Tails

HorsesAss.Org » Blog Archive » HA Bible Study: "Nope. That’s a total non-sequitor SeattleJew. Puddy said God looks at lawlessness. So how can man excuse illegal alien lawlessness? Good try.

Puddy said! Are you the Voice? BTW, slavery was the LAW in the US. Was that OK?

Our church was against slavery. We weren’t around for Salem witch hunts. Talk to those protestant churches who did it.

How nice. Nazis slaughter Jews, get conquered and now Germans should deny responsibility? They must need a A revelation that exempts them from German history. And does your church have some revelation that exempts itself from Chrsitianit history.

Look my friend. You know I am NOT antiChristian. I treasure the traditions we share that came from Christianity … egalitarianism, the concept of a loving God, passive resistance, … all of these grew from that root. BUT, the same root gave birth to chattel slavery, mass holocausts, etc.

To me the essence of humanism, whether one is an atheist or a theist, is learning from our errors. If your God prevents you from doing that either He is a bad God or you misunderstand him."
